Twenty-one Wayland High School students out of 1,100 who auditioned were selected to perform at the MMEA Northeastern Senior District Music Festival at Milton High School on Jan.10.
Months before the festival, students participated in a rigorous and highly competitive audition process that included performing solo pieces, playing scales, and completing sight-reading excerpts. This process can be nerve-wracking and unpredictable, as students have only one chance to demonstrate their skills over a short amount of time.
This yearโ€™s repertoire for the orchestra included โ€œRed Cape Tangoโ€ and โ€œOverture to West Side Story.โ€ During the festival concert, the orchestra performed first, followed shortly after by the band, jazz band, and chorus.
In addition to festival selection, students who placed within the top 50% of their section earned recommendations for the Mass. All-State Festival. Wayland received a total of 13 All-State recommendations.
