Frequently Asked Questions on MWRA Connection

How is my water bill calculated?

Wayland uses a 4-tier payment system to meet conservation requirements. Homeowners pay a higher rate with each additional tier.  For a household using 5,100 cubic feet each 6 months, the annual water bill would be approximately $1,000

What was the emergency connection last year? Aren’t we already on MWRA water?

The connection made in 2024 to the MWRA system is an emergency connection. This protects Wayland’s water resiliency with a backup source.

Can I elect not to get MWRA water and just get Wayland well water?

Wayland has just one water distribution system. Therefore, you cannot elect to specify the source of the water you will receive.

Doesn’t the MWRA use a different water disinfectant agent than Wayland? Do I need to do anything for my home water system (e.g. water filter, water softener) to use dual source water?

When the system is complete, Wayland will use the same disinfectant agent, chloramines, as the MWRA for their longer persistence during in route travel time.  Inquire with the vendor of your home purification system any questions about if changes might be needed.
