Wayland High School teams packed an intense stretch of fall sports action Oct. 15-25, turning in a mix of statement wins, narrow defeats, and season-closing performances across the Dual County League.
The varsity volleyball team delivered one of the strongest showings of the period, winning three of its last five matches to improve to 10โ7 on the season. Wayland swept Waltham, 3โ0, on Oct. 23 with commanding set scores of 25โ8, 25โ19, and 25โ18. It was the second consecutive victory after a 3โ1 triumph over Concord-Carlisle on Oct. 21. Earlier, the Warriors fell to Lincoln-Sudbury twiceโonce at home on Oct/ 16 and again on Oct. 24 by identical 3โ1 marginsโas well as at Belmont on October 17. Despite the setbacks, the Warriors remained one of the most competitive teams in the DCL Small, showing improved consistency behind strong net play and depth across the rotation.
Boys soccer rebounded from a tough start to the week with a shutout victory. After dropping a 1โ0 road contest to Concord-Carlisle on Oct. 21, the Warriors blanked Waltham, 2โ0, at home two days later. The win snapped a brief losing streak and gave Wayland its first league victory in October, lifting its overall record to 5โ8โ3. The team showed sharper defensive organization and ball control, converting early pressure into goals to secure the home win.
Girls soccer continued its competitive run despite falling to Lincoln-Sudbury, 3โ1, on Oct. 16 and to Concord-Carlisle later in the week. The squad demonstrated stronger second-half play and offensive coordination as the season neared its close.
Field hockey battled through the final stretch of its regular season, playing with heart against some of the leagueโs top programs. Wayland fell, 6โ1, at Concord-Carlisle on Oct. 17 and then lost, 4โ1, to Waltham on Oct. 20. Sophomore forward Ella Berenson scored the teamโs lone goal late in the fourth quarter. The Warriors finished the regular season with a 3โ14โ1 record, earning praise from players and coaches alike for their resilience and teamwork.
On the gridiron, Wayland football picked up its first victory of the year with a 48โ21 win over Waltham on Oct. 18. Junior quarterback Mikey Johansson threw for 253 yards and tallied four total touchdowns, while senior captain Alex Evangelista added a receiving score and junior captain Brajae Walton ran for another.
Beyond the high school fields, the Wayland-Weston Crew Association represented the town on the regional stage, competing in the 60th annual Head of the Charles Regatta on Oct. 19. The girls varsity eight placed 66th in the womenโs youth eights division, improving their time by 40 seconds over last year. Senior Ashley Maddocks said the team โwas overall pretty proudโ of its effort in a field of more than 850 rowing clubs and 11,000 athletes from across the globe.
